Members of Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard on Thursday detained 48 Indian fishermen and seized three fishing trawlers for illegally entering the country's waters.
The vessels were seized during a routine patrol in the Bay of Bengal near Mongla coastal area.
All detainees are Indian nationals and have been handed over to Mongla Police Station, where legal proceedings are underway.
However, the officials have not disclosed details about the detainees.
Citing the two forces, Mongla Police Station sources said that the Indian fishermen entered into Bangladesh waters illegally and were fishing on the Bay of Bengal while the members from Navy and Coast Guard on-duty detained them. While searching the trawlers, they have also recovered 2,700 kilograms of hilsa.
Mongla Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Anisur Rahman said, "Two separate cases are being filed by the coast guard and navy at the police station. After filing the case, the detained fishermen will be sent to the court concerned."
