Flood damages 15,100 ha Aman fields at Nalitabari

NALITABARI, SHERPUR, Oct 18: A total of 15,100 hectares (ha) of Aman paddy fields in low areas were damaged due to flooding in Nalitabari Upazila of the district.

According to field sources, after recession of most of the flood water, the damage to paddy fields has been visible. 
 
The flood in the upazila was triggered by upstream hilly tide due to downpour recently. Water remained stranded for 10 days.
Also public suffering has been increasing since the start of the recession of the flood water.

Along with the paddy-damaged scars, devastated houses and roads are also becoming visible.

 Hundreds of earthen house walls, tin-shed and semi-pucca houses were damaged; hundreds of fish ponds were washed away; and along with Aman crops, vegetable fields were damaged. 

Upazila agriculture department made a list of affected farmers and sent it to the Agriculture Ministry.

Affected farmers demanded permanent rehabilitation instead of relief assistance for the time being.

A recent visit found damaged scenarios in different fields in the upazila. With the recession of the flood water, people have started to return to their homes.

Also a fodder crisis has been created in the upazila. 

According to sources at the upazila administration, in 12 unions of the upazila, 4,068 houses were completely damaged while   1,200 ones were partially damaged.

Families of these houses have been destitute. They are living in others' houses or on roofs.  

A total of 108 ha of vegetable fields were damaged. The total damage of Aman paddy and vegetables has been estimated at about Tk 1 crore. 

Besides, 2,875 fish ponds were washed away.

A victim of Andharupara Village Shahidul Islam, 40, said, "I had three earthen houses. These were broken by tidal water. We are now living in other's house."

Achhia Begum of Fakirpara Village, 70, said, "The river broke my home. We are passing days in great trouble."

Farmers Habibur Rahman and Munsur Ali of Benir Gop Village said, "My all paddy fields were damaged. Now    it will be difficult for us to survive."

Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Wadud said, "We sent a list of affected 48,500 farmers to the Agriculture Ministry. Next action will be taken according to instructions of the authorities concerned."

Besides, as part of damage recovery and rehabilitation, a plan has been taken to distribute seeds of mustard, maize, and Boro paddy, he added.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Masud Rana said, on behalf of the upazila administration, all problems of affected farmers are being inquired.

Following the instructions of the authorities, the next steps will be taken, the UNO added.
