October 27 is the 49th death anniversary of my father Khan Sahib Mohammad Afzal who died in 1975 at the age of 83.
Born in 1894 at village Raninagar under Raninagar Upazila in Naogaon district, late Khan Sahib Afzal had a brilliant academic career, who became the first Muslim graduate in his police station. He secured First Division in Matriculation (then known as Entrance) and Intermediate examinations from Naogaon Krishna Dhan High School and Rajshahi College in 1913 and in 1916 respectively. He had to attend his classes walking six miles from his home. He had his Graduation in 1918 from Calcutta Presidency College and studied Law in Calcutta Rippon Law College.

During his college life he came into contact with prominent Muslim politicians like Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq, Khawaza Nazimuddin, Moulana Akram Khan, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, Mohammad Ali of Bogra. He also had an opportunity to become a class mate of Netaji Subash Bose at Calcutta Presidency College.
My father was associated with Bangiya Shahitya Parishad and came in contact with poet Rabindranath Tagor, Nazrul Islam, Abdul Wadud, Ananda Shankar Roy. He contributed articles to Azadi, Observer, Morning News. He was the Editor-in-Chief of local monthly Nabadiganta.

He was conferred the title Khan Sahib in 1953 for his service to government.

My father became distressed when my elder brother Lieutenant Anwarul Azim was killed by Pakistan occupaton army on May 5, 1971 when he was serving as GM of North Bengal Sugar Mills at Gopalpur in Natore district. My brother was awarded "Swadhinata Puroskar 2018", the highest civilian honour of the country, on 25th March, 2018. Now Gopalpur railway Station is named Azim Nagar Station.

My father is now in his eternal rest at the Central Naogaon Graveyard. We all now miss his love and affection that was our strength and inspiration in our family. On his 49th death anniversary, we pay our rich tribute to him with a pledge to follow his ideals and values which he stood for all his life.
