‘He passed his exams but couldn’t live to see his success’

"My son was a bright student. He passed the HSC exam this year. Yet, he isn't here to see his results. How do I cope with this grief? My heart is shattered."

These were the words of a tearful Hazera Begum, whose son Faisal Sarkar was killed during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka.

Faisal was an HSC examinee from the SM Mozammel Haq Technical School and College in the capital's Dakshinkhan area.

The results of the exams were released on Oct 15, and although the 20-year-old achieved a GPA score of 4.35, his life was cut short before he could celebrate his achievements.

Had he been alive, Faisal would have likely shared his happiness with his family and friends. His mother would have lovingly caressed his head with pride upon hearing of his results.

However, Faisal's untimely death has ended the possibility of a joyous celebration as a profound sorrow now envelops his family.

Ever since she found out that Faisal had passed his exams, his elderly mother Hazera has been inconsolable.

"How do I endure this pain? They buried my dear son as an unidentified person. I didn't even get the chance to see his face one last time," she lamented.

The son of Shafiul Islam from Kachisair village in Cumilla's Debidwar Upazila, Faisal lived in a rented house in Dhaka's Abdullahpur area of Dhaka.

He juggled his studies with a job as a bus supervisor for Shyamoli Paribahan to financially support his family back home in Cumilla.

On the afternoon of July 19, Faisal left his home to go to work for the last time amid student-led anti-discrimination protests.

Recounting that day's events, his family said that Faisal had headed to the Shyamoli Paribahan bus counter in Abdullahpur that evening.

Later, attempts to reach him by phone were futile as his mobile was found switched off. After a fruitless search, his family filed a missing person report at the Dakshinkhan Police Station on July 28.

Twelve days later, they received the heartbreaking news that Faisal was dead.

Faisal was fatally shot in the head during the protest.

His body, unidentified at the time, was buried by Anjuman Mufidul Islam.

On Aug 1, when his family visited Anjuman Mufidul Islam, they were shown photographs of unidentified bodies. Tragically, Faisal was among them.

Faysal, a cherished younger brother to six sisters and one of two brothers, had also successfully completed his SSC from the same institution where he later took his Higher Secondary Certificate exams.    —bdnews24.com

"I used to live and study in Dhaka with my brother. Since his death, I haven't been able to sleep properly and am now too frightened to return to Dhaka. I've moved back to Cumilla and am working at my brother-in-law's shop at the Baghur bus stand in Debidwar," said Fahad, Faisal's younger brother and a grade 11 student.

Abdur Rahim Sarkar, Faisal's brother-in-law, also shared his sorrow. "Learning about Faisal's academic success has been bittersweet. He was a bright young man who managed to achieve good grades despite the limited time he could devote to his studies due to his work commitments. They lived in a tin-roofed home."

"Faisal's earnings helped support his family alongside his studies. The family is completely devastated now," he added.
Rozina Akter, Faisal's sister, said, "All six of us sisters are married and Faisal was especially dear to us. It's heartbreaking to have lost him in such a violent manner. We later discovered that a police bullet was responsible for his death."

"Our father is very ill and hard of hearing. He has been inconsolable and withdrawn since learning of Faisal's passing."
