Salahuddin disheartened over Shakib's uncertain farewell

Coach Mohammad Salahuddin has voiced his frustration over the ongoing situation surrounding Bangladesh's star all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan.

The controversy emerged when Shakib, who had expressed his desire to play his final Test match against South Africa in Dhaka, found his plans derailed by protests in Bangladesh.
Shakib was set to return to the country for his farewell match and had been named in the Test squad. However, a dramatic turn of events left his future uncertain.

Protests erupted in Mirpur, with demonstrators demanding that Shakib be banned from representing Bangladesh. The protesters went so far as to submit a memorandum to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed, threatening unrest if Shakib were allowed to play. Concerned for Shakib's safety, a sports advisor recommended that he not return to the country.

Salahuddin, who has worked closely with Shakib for years, expressed deep disappointment over the situation. He pointed out Shakib's invaluable contributions to Bangladeshi cricket for over 15 years and highlighted the off-field support he has offered to those in need. Salahuddin questioned whether critics were aware of Shakib’s charitable efforts, including providing food and medical assistance to the less fortunate.

In a heartfelt social media post, Salahuddin wrote, "I've never felt so let down by my country and its people. Don’t we all make mistakes? If someone shows remorse, don't they deserve a second chance? We are losing our compassion. Shakib has helped countless people without seeking recognition."

Salahuddin also recalled the sacrifices made by key players such as Shakib, Tamim Iqbal, and Mashrafe Mortaza. He reminded fans of Mashrafe's perseverance through multiple knee surgeries, Tamim’s brave effort batting with a broken hand during the 2018 Asia Cup, and Shakib’s determination to bowl with a fractured finger. According to Salahuddin, these players should be celebrated for their dedication rather than condemned.

"They are being treated unfairly simply for not speaking out. When Mashrafe played after five surgeries, when Tamim batted with one hand, and when Shakib bowled through injury, they did it for the country. They have never harmed anyone and are not criminals," he added.

As the unrest continues, Shakib’s return to Bangladesh and his much-anticipated farewell from cricket remain in jeopardy. Salahuddin concluded his statement by expressing his sorrow over the situation, saying, "I am deeply hurt that these players might not get the chance to bid farewell on the field. We should learn to forgive, and in return, we too will be forgiven. Respecting others will earn you respect."
