BAGERHAT, Oct 20: Members of Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard on Thursday detained 48 Indian fishermen along with 2,700 kilograms of Hilsa and seized three fishing trawlers for illegally entering the country.
The vessels were seized during a routine patrol in the Bay of Bengal near Mongla coastal area.
All the detainees are Indian nationals and have been handed over to Mongla Police Station (PS), where legal proceedings are underway.
However, the officials have not disclosed details about the detainees.
Quoting the two forces, Mongla PS sources said that the Indian fishermen entered into Bangladesh waters illegally and were fishing on the Bay of Bengal while the members from Navy and Coast Guard on-duty detained them. While searching the trawlers, they have also recovered 2,700 kilograms of Hilsa.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mongla PS Md Anisur Rahman confirmed the matter, adding that two separate cases were filed by the Coast Guard and Navy with the PS.
After filing of the cases, the detained fishermen were produced before the court, the OC added.
