SAVAR, Sept 22: Vehicular movement on Nabinagar-Chandra Highway in Bypile area of Savar, remained suspended for 32 hours as the garment workers blocked the road demanding payment of their dues and reopening of their factories.
Witnesses said the workers of Generation Next Ltd factory took to the streets around 10:00am on Monday at Bypile intersection, halting vehicular movement.
Around 5:00pm, a team of law enforcing agencies asked them to go away from the road with assurance to fulfill their demands. But they did not pay any heed to the request and stayed there.
At one stage, police chased to disperse them, forcing the workers to leave the street. No one was injured. The agitated workers also vandalised 50 vehicles on the road.
Sarwar Alam, Director of Industrial Police-1, said the workers have been driven away and vehicular movement was normal.
Talking to some workers, they said the authorities concerned of Generation Next Ltd closed the factory for an indefinite period without clearing their dues.
The owners of the factory gave assurance to pay their salary several times but no initiative has been taken yet. Additional police have been deployed to avert further trouble.
