BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday said that the nation does not expect a constitutional or political crisis amid growing calls for the removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Speaking to reporters at BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan, Ahmed stressed the importance of national stability and warned against actions that could destabilize the country.
"The presidency is the highest constitutional office, and any vacancy due to resignation or removal would lead to a constitutional and national crisis," he stated. Ahmed added that any delay in the transition to democracy caused by a state crisis would be against the will of the people.

Ahmed urged the nation to remain vigilant to prevent the resurgence of "fascist" elements trying to create instability through various plots. He called for unity in confronting such challenges and preserving national interests.

The controversy surrounding the President arose after journalist Matiur Rahman Chowdhury claimed in an article that the President had told him he had not received a resignation letter from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This statement led Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul to accuse the President of breaching his oath of office by allegedly lying.

BNP leaders, including Salahuddin Ahmed and Nazrul Islam Khan, met with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus earlier in the day, discussing strategies to maintain national unity and ensure that any efforts to create a political crisis are thwarted. They reaffirmed their commitment to establishing a government through national elections following necessary reforms.

Speaking to reporters in front of the Chief Adviser's residence after the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan also said they will tackle any plots by the cohorts of the deposed fascist regime unitedly, together with all pro-democratic political parties and organisations.

Nazrul, along with BNP Standing Committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud and Salahuddin Ahmed, met the Chief Adviser to discuss the latest political situation.

The BNP leader said they discussed establishing a government of the people through a national election after completing the ongoing process of reforms.

Asked whether the Chief Adviser sought any opinion from them about the removal of the President, Nazrul parried the question.

He, however, said they urged all to remain cautious to ensure that a new constitutional or political crisis does not arise in the country.
