All-out preparations in Khulna to face Cyclone Dana

KHULNA, Oct 24: District administration has taken all-out preparations to deal with Cyclone Dana that may hit the coastal belts of India tonight.

Due to the impact of the severe cyclone, many parts of Khulna may be inundated with high tide according to the forecast of the Meteorological Department. 

The cyclone was centred at 12pm on Thursday 450 kilometre (KM) South of Mongla Port and 440km South-Southwest of Payra Port.
Under the peripheral effect of sever cyclonic storm, heavy (25mm) rainfall with gusty wind is prevailing in coastal districts, said Amirul Azad, regional chief of Khulna Met office.

Khulna District Development and Coordination Committee at an emergency meeting on Wednesday decided to keep standby medical teams with adequate relief materials including drinking water and dry foods in all shelter centres during pre and post-cyclone situation. The meeting chaired by DC Md Saiful Islam was held in the deputy commissioner's conference room.

DC Saiful said, steps have already been taken so that people and their livestock near coastal areas can safely take refuge in cyclone shelters, if necessary.

All ships, fishing boats, trawlers and other vessels in the Bay of Bengal have been asked to take shelter at the Mongla Port Jetty and coastal areas till further notice, he added.

Loading and unloading of containers have been asked to continue operation until Danger Signal-7 is hoisted, said Md Makruzzaman, deputy director of public relation of Mongla Port Authority (MPA). 

The MPA has issued its own Alert No. 1, and a control room has been opened for monitoring the situation. Two naval warships have been kept ready at the MPA jetty to face any problem.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the MPA auditorium with Chairman Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman in the chair. 
604 shelter centres ready 

Local administration has kept ready 604 shelter centres to accommodate evacuated people for safety.

The information was revealed at an emergency meeting of Khulna District Disaster Management Committee on Wednesday afternoon in the deputy commissioner (DC) office conference room. The meeting was presided over by Khulna DC Md Saiful Islam.

Due to influence of Dana rain started to drop in morning. Cloudy weather is prevailing at all coastal upazilas in Khulna Division. 

Rain and cloudy weather will also prevail in most areas of the Barisal and Chattogram divisions and some parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensing and Sylhet division, according to metrological office sources.
  
Workers are carrying out duty in shelter centres. They requested Water Development Board to take prevention initiatives to repair 10 to 12 kilometre risky embankments in   different upazilas of the district.

Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Safiqul Islam, Additional DC  (General) Bitan Kumar Mandal, Additional Police Superintendent Md hafizur Rahman, and District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Karim, among others, were present at the meeting.
