Labour Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan says the government is considering setting up alternative agriculture markets alongside each regular market so that farmers can directly sell their products.

Inaugurating the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh's mobile truck sales in Dhaka's South Begunbari at 10am on Thursday, he said: "There has been a proposal to create alternative agricultural markets, parallel to each market, where farmers will sell their produce directly."

"The initiative aims to end the tyranny of syndicates. The government is most willing to receive your ideas or advice to work in these sectors."

Stating that the government will not follow a 'firefighting style' in their battle with the syndicates, he said, "We will continue to work to solve the problem in the long run."

"Hoarding and similar activities raise the prices of goods and cause public suffering. We are working on the matter. The government will also maintain its firm stance in case of any syndicate."

On Wednesday, the TCB said that family card holders as well as individuals without cards will be able to buy products from the open trucks from Thursday.

Under the direction of the Ministry of Commerce, TCB products are being sold at affordable prices among 10 million cardholding families of low income. From now on, arrangements have also been made to sell TCB's products such as oil, pulses and rice at subsidised prices to ordinary consumers. The products will be sold from 50 trucks in Dhaka and 20 trucks in Chattogram, the TCB statement read.

Consumers will be able to get products such as 5 kg rice, 2 kg lentil, and 2-litres of soybean oil at Tk 470 from the trucks stationed at TCB points, the statement read.

The campaign will run from Oct 24 to Nov 30. However, the initiative is likely to be extended if inflation does not come down to a tolerable level, it added.    —bdnews24.com
