Prevent begging nuisance on RU campus

Published : Sunday, 27 October, 2024 at 12:00 AM  Count : 336
Dear sir,

Presently, begging has become a pain on the University of Rajshahi campus. Almost every student on campus faces this issue. When beggars see a student taking out their wallet, they run from afar and ask for alms. And it doesn't just happen once; it happens again and again. The same beggar approaches the same person to ask for alms more than once.

Public university students suffer from personal problems, family problems, and most of all, financial problems. In addition, this persistent begging always puts students in more trouble. There are many who cannot say no to a beggar, so they give alms despite not having much money. Later, they find that the money was part of their meal budget. It is also important to determine whether these beggars are genuinely in need or have chosen it as a profession. Whether they use the alms to support themselves or to buy drugs should also be investigated. In such cases, it becomes difficult to distinguish between a real beggar and an imposter. Nobody knows whether the money is going to the rightful people or not.

Therefore, I am drawing the attention of the administration to provide rehabilitation and alternative employment arrangements for the begging community and to save students on campus from this daily problem.
