The government has appointed eminent essayist, researcher, and literary critic Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq as the new president of Bangla Academy.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs issued a notification on Sunday confirming his appointment for the next three years.
According to the notification, Huq has been appointed as President of Bangla Academy under Section 6(1), 6(2), and 6(3) of the Bangla Academy Act, 2013 (Act No. 33 of 2013), with effect from the date of assuming office.
As President, Huq’s duties and responsibilities will be governed by the provisions outlined in the Bangla Academy Act, 2013.
Fazlul Huq, 84, taught at the Department of Bangla at Dhaka University for four decades. He is also an outspoken advocate for the use of the Bangla language at all levels as a convener of the Rashtrya Bhasha Bangla Rokkhya Committee.
Huq is replacing Selina Hossain in the post. Hossain, a fiction writer, was appointed as president of Bangla Academy on February 3, 2022 and resigned on October 17 after the fall of the Awami League government.
