Observer Online Report
Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana's bail will remain in jail as the Appellate Division has stayed his bail for six months in a case filed over deaths during the collapse of the building in April 2013.
A three-member Appellate Division bench led by senior Justice Ashfaqul Islam passed this order on Monday.
The court also instructed that a rule issued on the bail stay be resolved within two months.
Representing the state, Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf and Barrister Anik R Haque argued the case, while Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir appeared on behalf of Sohel Rana.
Earlier on October 1, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan and Justice KM Hafizul Alam granted six-month interim bail to Sohel Rana. The top court also issued rule on bail.
The next day, the Appellate Division stayed the bail.
At least 1,136 people, mostly garment workers, were killed and over 2,500 others injured after the nine-storey building came crashing down in Savar on April 24, 2013.
Sohel Rana, the owner of the building, is the main accused in the murder case filed over the incident.
On August 29, 2017, Sohel Rana was sentenced to three years' simple imprisonment in a graft case.
On April 6, 2023, the High Court granted bail to owner Sohel in the same case. Later, the state counsel filed a petition challenging the legality of the HC order. Later, on April 9, the Appellate Division stayed the order.
