CHIRIRBANDAR, DINAJPUR, Oct 30:  Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) fields were vandalised by Cyclone Dana impacted wind in Chirirbandar Upazila of the district.

T-Aman farmers have turned directionless seeing their damaged croplands.

According to local sources, drifting rainfall and thunder shower continued for the last few days due to the Dana impact, which also damaged advance vegetable fields.

A visit on October 28 to different areas in the upazila found nosedived green-ripe T-Aman plants.

This year farmers cultivated T-Aman amid drought, with costly irrigation. The irrigation increased their cultivation costs.

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, affected farmers said, mainly drifting rain and thunder showers hit the upazila on Thursday and Friday.

According to sources at the upazila agriculture office, this season T-Aman was cultivated on 23,578 hectares (ha) of land in 12 unions of the upazila. Of the total land, BRRI-75, 87, and BINA-17 were cultivated on 400 ha.

Farmer Ujjal of Uttar Nosrotpur Village at Nosrotpur Union said, "The drifting rain along with thunder shower on Thursday and Friday damaged my 20 decimal lands of T-Aman."

Farmer Swapon of the same village said, "One bigha of my three bigha T-Aman fields were nosedived."

Farmer Golam Rabbani said, "We can get 4-5 maund paddy instead of expected 25-30 maund per bigha due to the destruction by Dana."

Many farmers have straightened their nosedived paddy and chilli plants by tying with ropes to protect these from total destruction. Others are cutting their paddy plants for feeding cattle.

Farmer Poresh Chandra Ray of Dakkhin Nosrotpur Village said, "Seeing the clear sky, I cut my paddy and kept in the field. But I have been in tension after the rain."

Upazila Agriculture Officer Johra Sultana Sharmin confirmed nosedived paddy fields in many areas of the upazila.

She further said, "Farmers can make up their situation. We advised them for cutting ripe paddy rapidly."
