SIRAJGANJ, Oct 31: A total of 3,500 bigha of croplands are under stranded water in Tarash Upazila of the district.

Due to unplanned dams and pond-digging, these lands have been remaining in water for the last six years. The water stagnation remains for 7-8 months in a year.

Hundreds of farmers are deprived of crop cultivation including transplanted Aman paddy.

According to field sources, lands of about 12 villages including Sree Krishnapur, Jurjuri, Vikompur, Jahangirganti, Madhabpur, Boalia, Sorappur, Mathurapur, in Bidi Magura in the upazila are very fertile.

But water is not available in these lands in the month of Bhadra. That is why paddy, garlic, mustard and other crops cannot be cultivated in these lands.

A farmer of Madhabpur Village Ali Asgor said, once wheat, potato, paddy, mustard and other crops would be cultivated in these lands; but for getting higher profits by cultivating fishes, some farmers started pond-digging in these three times cropping lands ten years back.

In five/six villages, about 400 ponds were dug in three times cropping lands.

Mir Shahidul Islam, convenor of Tarash Upazila Krishal Bachaon, said, "We formed human chain, and held farmers' gathering. But these did not stir the nerve of the authorities concerned in addressing the water-logging."

If pond digging is not stopped, it is not possible to resolve the water-stranding, said Tsrash Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Abdullah Al Mamun.

Tarash Upazila Nirbahi Officer Swing Mong Marma said, "Pond-digging in cropland is a big problem in Tsrash Upazila. It is a big challenge to us.

Despite various activities, pond-digging could not be stopped. This year six persons were jailed for one year term on charge of pond-digging. Yet, talk is going on with the authorities about addressing the water stagnation."

AKM Mofidul Islam, deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension, said, also the adjoining lands of the water-logged lands have been uncultivable because of the stagnation.

"As we coordinated with authorities, the pond-digging trend has come to a decrease," he added.
