Prices of potatoes and onions, the two most essential commodities, show no signs of falling in price. Hope for reduction in prices of vegetables, eggs, chicken, seems to be a far cry even after political change over.
Potatoes are now selling at Tk 70 to Tk 75 per kg in the market, which was Tk 55 to Tk 60 last month. The price of local onion rose from Tk 110 to Tk 120 to Tk 140 to Tk 150. However, onion imported from India is being bought within Tk 120.
Talking to the buyers in different markets of the capital on Friday, it is known that they find this unusual price of potatoes and onions very uncomfortable.
A person named Jamal Uddin said, "The price of potatoes is Tk 70, it cannot be accepted in any way. Same is the case with onion. But two products are so essential that they must be bought when they hit the market. There is no alternative."
He said, "If the family needs 5 kg of potatoes and 5 kg of onions in a month, they will have to spend Tk 1,000. Isn't it abnormal?
Regarding the price of these two products, the wholesale traders of Karwan Bazar say that the potato-onion season is nearing its end. Prices go up every year at this time. However, the price has increased since the beginning of this year. After that, the market has become increasingly volatile.
Moreover, the prices of bottled soybeans in the market did not increase during the week, but the prices of open oil increased. Soybean oil has increased from Tk 170 to Tk 171 per liter in the market. Whereas bottled soybean oil is Tk 167 to Tk 172.
Besides, loose palm oil is being sold at Tk 162 to Tk 163 and Super Palm oil at Tk 164 to Tk 165 per liter.
Meanwhile, broiler and golden chicken prices in the market are lower than last week. Broiler chickens are now selling at Tk 175 to Tk 180 per kg, up from Tk 195 to Tk 200.
The price of Sonali chicken is Tk 310 to Tk 320 per kg. Besides, the price of each dozen farm chicken eggs is selling in the market between Tk 150 and Tk 170.
On the other hand, the price of vegetables in the market has decreased a lot compared to last month. Among them, Palol, brinjal, Chichinga (snake gourd) have come down to Tk 50 to Tk 60. Besides, barbati, bitter gourd and kankarol are being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100 and green papaya at Tk 40. A few days ago, the price of these vegetables was above Tk 100.
On the other hand, cauliflower has come down from Tk 50 to Tk 30 and gourd has come down from Tk 80 to Tk 100 to Tk 50 to Tk 60. Green chillies are being sold at Tk 160 to Tk 200 per kg.
Vegetable seller Abu Hanif said that the supply of winter vegetables is increasing. The price will decrease further in the future.
