Former Economics Professor at Jahangirnagar University Anu Muhammad on Thursday criticised the resurgence of extortion in various areas following July Movement, noting that a new group of extortionists had emerged and exploitation by market leaseholders continued.

He called on the government to take immediate action against these practices.

Anu Muhammad made the remarks at a press conference held at Jahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club in the morning.

Held by the Democratic Rights Committee, speakers at the press conference reviewed the progress of their 13-point proposals presented to the interim government on October 5, with Anu Muhammad providing an evaluation.

Joint convener of the Committee Maha Mirza read out the 13-point proposals.

Anu Muhammad said, "We do not understand why the full list of martyrs, missing persons, and injured individuals has not been published yet. The families of the martyrs and the injured have not been properly cared for."

He expressed concerns about the trials at the International Criminal Tribunal, stating that the lack of specificity in the cases raised doubts about their effectiveness.

He also pointed out that false and harassment cases filed over the past 15 years had still not been withdrawn. He mentioned that the Constitutional Reform Commission would soon present a draft to the nation, with the final version to be shaped by public opinion. He stressed that more work was needed to ensure judicial independence, particularly in light of concerns over judicial appointments.

Anu Muhammad also commented on the recent Durga Puja celebrations, which were largely peaceful, but criticised the government for failing to identify those involved in political violence. He warned that without action, the Modi government in India could exploit the situation to spread misinformation.

"If the government does not take proper action, this could give space for propaganda by the Indian government or the corrupt ruling regime," he said.

Regarding rising commodity prices, Anu Muhammad said no effective measures had been taken to control it.  He observed that products like oil, eggs, and onions were controlled by a few companies, leading to artificial shortages.

He called for the publication of the findings from two investigation committees on bank looting, money laundering, and stock market manipulation under the previous government.

Anu Muhammad expressed hope that the government would follow through on its promise not to renew rental and quick rental agreements, particularly those made under the 2010 Indemnity Act.
