KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, Nov 22: Several places of an important road in Ward No. 8 area of Charmartin Union under Kamalnagar Upazila have collapsed and become impassable. This condition is caused by the pressure of the Meghna's abnormal tide and heavy rain during the monsoon season.

Because of this situation, bamboo pathways have been constructed at five broken spots along the road from Kashem Member shop to Manikganj Bazar. Due to this, the movement of the people including children and the elderly in the area has turned impossible; so the residents demand the construction of the road along with bridge.

According to field sources, Janata Bazar Mainul Islam Qoumi Madrasa, Manikganj Bazar Darus Salam Qoumi Madrasa and K Alam Government Primary School are located next to the road. Along with local residents, more than 400 students of these educational institutions have been traveling through the road.

Moreover, the institutions are also used as polling centres during elections. But in the last monsoon season, due to the abnormal tide of Meghna River and heavy rain water pressure, at least five places of the road have collapsed and created canal-like water bodies. As a result, bamboo pathways were built at these places on the initiative of the locals for movement.

Along with the public, young students are taking life-risk with these pathways. However, children and old people are facing extreme sufferings while moving through the pathways. As a result, minor accidents are also happening from time to time.

Mufti Shariful Islam, a local resident, said that bamboo pathways on the road hampering normal movement. It has now become the biggest problem in the area. Therefore, he demanded proper initiative of the administration to solve the problem.

Maulana Yusuf, the teacher of the local Mainul Islam Qaumi Madrasa, said that the bad condition of the road has affected the education of the madrasa. Attendance of child students in madrasas has decreased.

Local Union Parishad Member Mahfuzur Rahman Rajan said that he has informed the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) several times about the situation. He commented that if the road is reconstructed and the bridge is built at a suitable place,  people's sufferings could have been avoided.

Chairman of Charmartin Union Parishad Yusuf Ali Mia said, "The people of the area are suffering a lot due to the condition of the road. Efforts have been made several times before to solve the problem. But nothing worked. Therefore, we seek the cooperation of the authorities concerned for its sustainable solution".

UNO Suchitra Ranjan Das said that the road is on the bank of the Meghna River, for which this situation has arisen. Necessary measures will be taken to ensure smooth movement of the people.
