Huge export potential for our seafoods

A huge part of our food supply is from the sea. The world's huge amount of food supply is also from the sea. Resources extracted from the sea have become the main sources of life and livelihood. First among these resources are various species of marine fishes. 

Although many marine fishes are common in the domestic market, all fishes are in demand in the foreign markets. There are also a variety of animals that have begun to be listed as marine animals and for food. Sea food has been a Favorite for a long time. Sea food is in the diet chart of many people because it is not only tasty, but also healthy. Although it is still out of the reach of the marginal people, but gradually some seafood has even reached into rural areas. They are also eating Apart from the food demand, what we need to focus on is the foreign market for seafood. We need to capture the foreign market of seafood. Rather, our western countries have moved forward. Sea-food has added new potential to the economy. 

However, Bangladesh has not been able to produce and export seafood extensively, at least compared to other countries. But there are Possibilities. Bangladesh is in a good position in freshwater fish production and export. Also, if sea food like different types of animals like whale extracted from the sea) or fish (like salmon and coral) can be added, then the export sector will be stronger. 

Along with Bengali, foreign or Mughl's variety of food, sea food has been on the list of foodies' favorites for a long time.

Humans have been collecting marine life since 165,000 years ago. Collecting, processing and consuming seafood has been around for ages. As evidenced by various archaeological remains, seafood has always been important for survival. 

In the evolution of time, new times, new days, new people have appeared. But even in the age of advanced people, the appeal of seafood has not decreased so much. Along with freshwater fish, marine fish has now come forward as a delicacy. Mainly dry types of seafood are more popular. One is a different species of marine fish. Salmon, trout, sardine, coral are delicious to eat. Another seafood is molluscs.


These include different types of octopus, squid, oysters etc. There is another type of seafood called crustaceans. It includes a variety of shrimps, lobsters and crabs. Marine fish is the Main among these. However, octopus, squid and oysters are in great demand abroad. These sea creatures are transformed in a variety of delicious dishes following the Cooking process. Bangladesh sea food sector is making extensive gains in the global market. Currently Bangladesh earns Tk 4790.34 crore by exporting about 70 thousand metric tons of seafood like lobster, crab, locally popular hilsa fish, pomfret, baby octopus, squid, mackerel and kingfish. 

India's seafood exports have grown significantly over the past decade.

These efforts have established India as a major supplier to the global seafood market. According to the Vietnam-based media, the US, China, European Union (EU), Southeast Asia and Japan are the primary destinations for Indian seafood. Accessing these strategic markets has created a steady demand for Indian seafood. 

Frozen prawns emerged as the most popular product in FY 2023-24. It contributes 66 percent of the country's total seafood exports.
