Remains of 24 soldiers of Japan who were buried at Mainamati War Cemetery in the wake of the 2nd World War were flown home in two special flights at early hours of Monday, said war history researcher Bir Protik Lt Col (Retd) Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir.
He told the Daily Observer at around 6:30pm on Sunday, the remains would reach Dhaka Airport by 11:00pm on Sunday.
Zahir assisted a seven-member visiting Japanese team to exhume and repatriate the remains of the fallen soldiers of Japan.
"It will take time to complete the immigration process. Hopefully two special flights of Thai Airlines will take the remains to Japan by 2:00am," he said.
The remains of 24 soldiers of Japan , who were laid to rest at the Mainamati War Cemetery in the wake of the Second World War, are being repatriated to Japan after 81 years.
A seven-member forensic team, led by Tatsuaki Inoue, Director of the 3rd Operations Department of the Japan Association for Recovery and Repatriation of War Casualties, exhumed the remains from November 13 to November 24.
