HC directive to ban battery-run ricks will be implemented: Home Adviser

Retired persons to be hired to control traffic

Home Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday, the government will implement the directives of the High Court's (HC) on  battery-run rickshaws.

"The matter is completely the jurisdiction of the High Court. We are just implementing the instruction of the High Court. We expect that good instructions will come and we will implement those. Through the instruction of the court, the problems of battery run auto rickshaw would be resolved," he told reporters after a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Law and Order held in the Home Ministry conference room at Bangladesh Secretariat.

Regarding traffic congestion in Dhaka city, Jahangir Alam said that there will be no shops on roads. Those would be removed from the roads.

"At present, a total 700 students have been working to control the traffic situation in Dhaka city. The government is planning to appoint retired persons of e law enforcement agencies like Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, Ansar and BGB for the work. They will work to control the traffic system. Around 500 such persons will work in community policing system to tackle the traffic system," he said, adding that in such cases, the age limit would be relaxed for the work.

In response to a query about fake and false cases, the Home Adviser said it is true that such cases are being filed and strict action will be taken against those doing this. 

"To ensure that false cases harass no one, committees will be established in each district," he said, adding, "The structure of the committee has not been finalised. However, deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, and a member from the district legal aid committee will be the in this committee. The committee will determine who is actual accused along with the police? Same time, it will ensure that no one is harassed in fake and false cases."

Mentioning that the law and order situation is gradually improving, the home adviser said strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to deteriorate it.

According to a Home Ministry press release, the meeting also discussed the issues of improving law and order,  tackling the law and order during the Bishwa Ijtema, entire security system, implementation of High Court directives on battery run auto rickshaw, celebration of upcoming Victory Day on December 16, arresting miscreants, prevention of harassment by false cases, improving the traffic system, and preventing misuse of narcotics across the country.

The Home Adviser chaired the meeting attended by committee members and senior officials of the ministry and law enforcement agencies including police.
