Different courts on Sunday sentenced a woman and a man to life-term imprisonment in separate cases in two districts - Narail and Chattogram.
NARAIL: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a woman to life-term imprisonment in a case under the Narcotics Control Act filed in 2014.
Narail Additional District and Sessions Court-1 Judge Md Saiful Alam handed down the verdict in absence of the convict.
The convicted woman is Mst Taslima Begum, 50, wife of Md Mukul Molla, a resident of Chhoyghuria Village in Satkhira District.
The court also fined her Tk 10,000.
According to the prosecution, Detective Branch (DB) of Police set up a check-post in front of Shibtala Temple in Chanchra Village on the Narail-Jashore highway on April 23, 2014. At that time, the team searched a Narail-bound bus from Jashore, and arrested Taslima along with 80 bottles of phensedyl.
District DB Police Sub-Inspector Md Shahabur Rahman then lodged a case under the Narcotics Control Act with Narail Sadar Police Station (PS) being the plaintiff.
Later on, Taslima came out of the jail on bail and went into hiding.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court, and following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Sunday after examining the case records and taking depositions of nine witnesses.
CHATTOGRAM: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for violating a minor girl in Panchliash area of the city six years back.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Judge Begum Ferdouse Ara passed the order.
The convict is Mustafizur Rahman Babu, 24, hails from Mymensingh District.
The court also fined him Tk one lakh, and in default, he has to suffer six more months in jail.
According to the prosecution, Mustafizur violated an 11-year-old madrasa girl in Panchliash area on December 7, 2019.
Later on, the victim's father filed a case against three persons with Panchliash PS on November 11.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court on December 31, while the court framed charges on November 11 in 2020.
Following this, the tribunal pronounced the verdict on Sunday after examining eight prosecution witnesses out of 11.
