NEW DELHI, Nov 25: Four men were killed, and numerous others, including police and administrative personnel, were injured in violent protests opposing a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque in Sambhal district under India's Uttar Pradesh.
The violence broke out yesterday, leading to the suspension of internet services in Sambhal for 24 hours. The district administration also declared all schools closed today, according to PTI.
Prohibitory orders under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were imposed, restricting the entry of outsiders, social organisations, and public representatives into the district without official permission, said District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Moradabad) Muniraj confirmed that three men -- Naeem, Bilal, and Nauman, all around 25 years old -- died in the violence. Another injured individual succumbed to injuries during treatment.
The protests erupted as a court-mandated survey of the Jama Masjid, linked to claims that a temple once stood at the site, began early yesterday.
Protesters clashed with security personnel, pelting them with stones and torching vehicles. Security forces responded with tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. —PTI
