Police refrain from using excessive force to prevent escalation: DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday stated that police refrained from using excessive force during the clashes at Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College to prevent further escalation of violence.

DMP made the remark in a press release signed by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman of DMP Media and Public Relations Division on Monday evening.
DMP explained that despite a significant police presence in Sutrapur and Demra since early morning, the decision to use restraint was aimed at maintaining control without exacerbating the volatile situation. However, groups of students from Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Government Kabi Nazrul College, and Mollah College clashed, resulting in injuries to around 25 students. The DMP clarified that rumors circulating on social media about fatalities were unfounded and urged people to avoid spreading misinformation.

The tensions stemmed from the death of a Mollah College student, Abhijit Haldar, who reportedly died from alleged medical negligence. The incident sparked protests with students from Mollah College staging demonstrations and vandalizing Dhaka National Medical College.

On Monday, a large number of students from Suhrawardy and Kabi Nazrul Colleges attempted to march toward Mollah College. Despite police efforts to block them, the students broke through and caused extensive damage.

According to DMP, while the situation became increasingly volatile, officers prioritized de-escalation over aggressive intervention to avoid inflaming tensions.

"The police deployed personnel from 7:00 AM to ensure the safety of key locations, but the unruly and aggressive crowd bypassed police barriers," said DC Talebur Rahman.

The press release also acknowledged the complexity of managing student groups from rival factions, including the United Colleges of Bangladesh (UCB) forum, which represents 35 colleges, and a coalition of Dhaka's seven colleges.

The DMP urged restraint and cooperation from all sides, including student groups, to resolve conflicts peacefully. Legal actions will be taken against those involved in vandalism, ensuring accountability for the destruction caused during the unrest.
