BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said on Monday that, BNP has no discord with the interim government over reforms.

Speaking virtually as chief guest at the annual general meeting of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) held at National Press Club he said, "Those who are trying to mislead the people by raising the issue whether election is needed first or state reforms,  have evil motives."

Tarique said, BNP first placed 27-point state reform proposals in 2022 and later it announced 31-point proposals after holding talks with other democratic political parties.

"Within the 31-point state reform proposal we included formation of a media commission comprising retired judge of the Supreme Court and experienced journalists." he said.

"BNP has no disagreement with the interim government over its reforms programme," Tarique added.

He said that, BNP believes, since reforms are an ongoing process, the next government will carry on the interim government's reforms initiatives.

Without qualitative improvement of democratic political culture, reforms cannot be sustainable, Tatique said.

He said "If we cannot save people from their daily hassles we cannot ensure state reforms."

He demanded free and fair election within a logical time.

Tarique said "It is true that the people did  not sacrifice lives during July-August uprising only for election but also to build peoples state."

"In democratic political practice establishment of people's rights and ensure free and fair election is the prime issue. But in the current political context we cannot say that, election will bring a political party to power," he said.

"At the same time, I want to say relationship between the people and the government has to be restored by restoring the right to vote," he added.

Tarique underscored the need for empowering people politically to remove fascism from the country's political culture.

Tarique urged everyone, including journalists, to stay vigilant, warning that fascist forces and their supporters are conspiring against pro-Bangladesh and democratic forces, attempting to create division and raise their heads once again.

"But I strongly believe that if we all remain alert, there will be no room for misunderstandings in the forces on the side of Bangladesh," he said.

Tarique alleged that various conspiracies, both domestic and foreign, have begun to hinder the nation's ongoing journey towards establishing democracy. "The ousted dictator and his cronies are attempting to regain power through various tactics."

Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka South City unit Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, BNP Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Shaheeduddin Chowdury Anee, Abdus Salam Azad, Special Assistant to the Chairperson Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Journalist Leader M Abdullah, Quader Gani Chowdhury, Shahidul Islam and Khorshed Alam speaks among others.
