Life returns to Madhumati: River routes resume after 20-day disruption

The Madhumati River in Gopalganj has regained its vitality after being choked with a massive water hyacinth blockade for 20 days.

The congestion had halted boat routes connecting Gopalganj with five neighboring districts: Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Narail, Barishal, and Khulna.

The water hyacinths had accumulated so densely near the Manikhar Bridge that people could walk across the river on the floating vegetation. However, following media reports highlighting the issue, Gopalganj Water Development Board took swift action, clearing a one-kilometer stretch of the river on Monday (November 25).

The Manikhar Bridge, built on cluster pillars, caused the hyacinths to get trapped, creating a massive pileup. This is not the first time the river faced such an issue; a similar situation occurred two years ago, which was also resolved through government intervention.

Gopalganj Water Development Board's Executive Engineer, S.M. Refat Jamil, confirmed that the clearance operation restored normalcy. "For 20 days, no boats, trawlers or cargo vessels could navigate the river, severely affecting trade and local livelihoods. After receiving approval from higher authorities, we successfully removed the blockage, ensuring uninterrupted waterway operations," he said.

The operation has been a relief for traders and residents who depend on the river for transport and commerce. "Madhumati River has come back to life and boat routes connecting five districts are now operational," said local trader Shaukat Khan.

Residents like Zahidul Khan expressed gratitude for the river's reopening, as it reduces travel distance significantly. Previously, travelers had to detour 25 kilometers via Jogania due to the blockage. The swift intervention has made commuting more convenient.

Monir Gazi, Chairman of Urfi Union Parishad, noted that the Madhumati is a lifeline for the region, supporting around 200 boats daily. "The blockage had even posed long-term risks to the bridge. Now, with the water hyacinths cleared, vessels can move freely, benefiting trade and travel across the region," he added.
