Sound pollution from illegal resorts hampers wildlife in Sundarban

KHULNA, Nov 27: Modern electronic devices, using of generators and air condition in cottages and resorts, illegally built in Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat, adjacent to the Sundarban, are creating various problems for wildlife living and reproductive cycle in the Sundarban.

Without permission of the Department of Environment (DoE) in Khulna, at least 23 establishments built in the name of eco-cottage and eco-resort in recent years, according to local people and forest officials.

"The resorts and cottages have been built at Kailashganj, Dhangmari and Baniashanta under Dakope Upazila in Khulna, Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat and Shyamnagar Upazila in Satkhira, in one side of canals of the Sundarban.

The 23 resorts and cottages including Bonbas, Bonlata, Eraboti, Nirbason, Sundori, Bonbibi, Mangrove Heaven, Junglebari Mangrove, Golkanon, Barsa and Tiger point built in the last one decade, according to forest officials.

Most of the resorts and cottages were built grabbing khas land and some canals. Concrete stairs and jetty have been made into the rivers and canals, the officials alleged.

The natural habitats of the wildlife are being disturbed because of sound pollution frequently with traditional microphones, electronic devices and sound boxes during DJ parties, they said, adding that plastic bottles and foil packets of snacks harm environment.

While talking with the  Observer Mihir Kumar Doe, conservator of Khulna Forest Circle, said, the Department of Forest has planned to formulate 'Sundarban Echo Tourism Masterplan' in order to bring cottages and resorts under law.

Mentioning resorts and cottages were built in the outside of the forest, the CF Doe said the DoE is the responsible authority to watch the matter.

Professor Dr Abdullah Harun Chowdhury of Environment and Science Discipline of Khulna University said that 10 kilometres areas surrounded by the Sundarban are the 'Environmentally Sensitive Area.'  Construction of all kinds of establishment is strictly prohibited there.

Babul Howlader, Khulna divisional coordinator of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA) said, although resorts and cottages are not in the forest land, it establishment depends on the forest livelihood.
