Bangladesh suffered a massive 201-run defeat in the first Test of the two-match series against the West Indies as they were bowled out for 132 runs in their second innings while chasing a challenging target of 334 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua on Wednesday.
Resuming on their overnight score of 109 for seven after mediocre contributions from Liton Das (22) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (45), the remaining three wickets managed to survive only seven overs on the final day adding a mere 23 runs.
Jaker Ali, resuming his innings on 15, scored 31 before falling, while Hasan Mahmud was dismissed for a duck. Shoriful Islam, who retired hurt on one, did not return to bat leaving Taskin Ahmed unbeaten on four.
Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales led the West Indies' bowling attack with three wickets each, while Alzarri Joseph took two and Shamar Joseph chipped in with one.
Earlier in the match, the West Indies displayed a commanding batting performance after being invited by Bangladesh to bat first. They declared their first innings at 450 for nine, with standout contributions from Justin Greaves (an unbeaten 115), Mikyle Louis (97), Alick Athanaze (90) and Kemar Roach (47).
For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud was the most successful bowler claiming three wickets. Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up two each, while Taijul Islam took one.
In reply, Bangladesh's first innings saw half-centuries from Jaker Ali (53) and Mominul Haque (50) along with a 40-run contribution from Liton Das. Despite their efforts, the visitors declared their first innings at 266 for nine wickets, trailing the West Indies by 184 runs.
The West Indies' bowling attack was led by Alzarri Joseph, who took three wickets. Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales picked up two each, while Kemar Roach and Shamar Joseph claimed one apiece.
Bangladesh's bowlers staged an impressive comeback dismissing the West Indies for just 152 in their second innings. Alick Athanaze scored 42 runs, while captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Joshua Da Silva chipped in with 23 and 22 runs respectively.
Taskin Ahmed delivered a career-best performance taking six wickets for 64 runs. Miraz claimed two wickets, while Taijul and Shoriful picked up one each.
With this win, the West Indies have taken a 1-0 lead in the series.
