The Islamic University (IU) unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has submitted over 110 written proposals to reform the university to the Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah on Saturday, following the July uprising. The proposals include ensuring that teachers attend classes according to the timetable.
Around 2:00 pm, they presented the proposals to journalists at a press briefing. IU Chhatra Shibir president HM Abu Musa, secretary Mahmudul Hasan, and office secretary Yusuf Ali were present at the briefing.
The Shibir leaders presented 110 demands in 24 categories. Their notable demands include- Identifying and taking immediate academic, administrative, and legal action against students, teachers, officers, and employees of IU who directly or indirectly supported the genocide of July uprising, withdrawing all false cases filed against students over the past 16 years, publishing a white paper on all the corruption of the university administration during the previous Awami League regime, Immediately changing the names of all the institutions and plaques of the university that were named after fascist icons, making the non-credit Bangladesh Studies course mandatory for all and including the background and history of the July Revolution as part of the course content, establishing a corner and collection in the central library to commemorate the student-people's uprising in the July Revolution, taking visible and effective measures to ensure accommodation for 100% of students on campus and making all activities including hall management and seat allocation free from political influence, enacting a law to permanently abolish the guest room and common room culture in the university, ensuring the presence of hall provosts and house tutors on campus and regular attendance in their offices.
The other demands are- strictly following the academic calendar to address the session jam, increasing the number and amount of session-based scholarships, reducing various fees that were arbitrarily increased during the authoritarian regime and fixing a reasonable fee, modernizing the IU medical center, recruiting skilled manpower, and upgrading it to a self-sufficient medical center, enacting a law to establish the Islamic University Students' Union (IKSU) and taking visible and effective measures for elections, completely digitizing the administrative and academic activities of the university, ensuring the presence of officers and employees at their respective workplaces during office hours, constructing a stadium and swimming pool on campus, establishing a rail link between Kushtia-Jhenaidah, ensuring that recruitment in various posts is free from political and regional influence and based on transparency, expediting ongoing infrastructure development and expanding the campus by acquiring land.
HM Abu Musa, the president of the IU unit of Shibir, said, 'We have submitted appropriate reform proposals to build a safe, modern, and anarchy-free campus, upholding the sacrifices and values of the great martyrs of the July Revolution. We conducted a research team to identify the campus reforms and the real problems of the campus. We have reviewed and presented the demands and informed the Vice-Chancellor in writing. We will provide all-out cooperation to implement the demands. We want the campus to be reformed in a new way and the campus to be student-friendly.'
