GAIBANDHA, Dec 6: A memorial meeting on martyred freedom fighters was held on the premises of Khamar Dhanaruha High School under Muktinagar Union of Saghata Upazila in the district on Wednesday  with due respect.

After talking to the freedom fighters it is learnt that there were two bastons (Ghati) of Pakistani forces.  These were Fulchhari Police Station and Teestamukh Railway Ferryghat. Pak occupation forces used to come here from other parts of the country by boat, steamers and trains and commit all kinds of misdemeanors including murder, rape, arson attacks, looting from the bastions. They also used to patrol regularly so that the freedom fighters could not go to Mankar Ahar of Assam, India via Razibpur or Roumari of Kurigram.
The freedom fighters led by Company Commander Rostam Ali Khandaker took a plan to liberate Fulchhari police headquarters from the hands of Pak occupation forces as early as possible.

Accordingly, the freedom fighters were divided into four groups and took position around the police station in the late night of December 3 in 1971.

Then, the Pak occupation forces were enforced to flee the police station and took shelter nearby Gobindi Embankment area under Saghata thana of the then Gaibandha sub-division.

Following the Pak forces, the FFs moved to the area and took position there. At one stage, a massive face-to-face fight took place between the FFs and the Pak forces on that day.

In the fight, 27 Pak soldiers were killed and 5 FFs namely Jahedul Haque Badal, Afzal Hossain, Kabez Ali, Osman Gani and Abdus Sobhan embraced martyrdom.

The following day, they were buried on the ground of Dhanaruha Primary School under Muktinagar Union of Shaghata thana on December 05 at the initiatives of the locals and the freedom fighters.

Later, the Pak forces left Fulchhari Thana with bag and baggage and took shelter in Rangpur cantonment. Thus, Fulchhari was freed from the clutches of the Pakistan occupation army.

To remember the five martyred freedom fighters, a memorial function was held on the premises of Khamar Dhanaruha High School on Wednesday.

The 4th December Celebration Committee led by Freedom Fighter Azhar Ali arranged the function to pay homage to five valiant FFs who embraced martyrdom in face-to-face fight with the Pak forces on December 4 in 1971.
