BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday slammed the comments of Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam about political leaders and parties as anti-political. He asserted that political. parties do not expect such statement by the interim government.

Speaking with the reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his return home completing a 10-day visit to London he said, "I don't know in what context he (Adviser Nahid) made that statement. But, such remarks are "anti-political". We do not expect such statements to be made by them."

He said that, political parties are supporting the interim government with the aim of restoring democracy, for which they have been fighting for the last 15 years.

Reiterating BNP's stand on elections he stressed, "We hope the interim government will arrange the polls after completing the necessary minimum reforms".

During a meeting at the Secretariat with members of a delegation from British Global Partners Governance (GPG), including Chile's former Minister of Social Development Giorgio Jackson on Wednesday, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam said, "Political parties are trying to undermine interim government. They want the country's reforms to occur under a politically restructured government."

"There is an expectation among the public that new political parties will be formed after the July mass uprising. If such a party succeeds, it will pose a significant challenge to the current political entities,"  Nahid said, according to media reports.

That is why current political parties are trying to undermine the interim government by portraying it as a failure, Nahid added.

Fakhrul said that, it is a wrong perception that BNP gives priority to the election over reforms, reminding that it was the BNP which had put forward its reform proposals two years ago.

When asked about BNP's acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's possible return to the country from London, Fakhrul said, "As you know, he has been facing numerous false cases filed out of political vendetta. He'll return home once these cases are withdrawn or resolved through the court."

Fakhrul who met the party's acting Chairman in London, said that, Tarique Rahman urged the people to remain patient to have the democracy restored through a national election.

Fakhrul said that, Tarique also urged party leaders and workers to remain united and focus on the next election, describing it as the first crucial step towards the restoration of democracy.

Responding to a question about Bangladesh-India relations, Fakhrul said the issues between the two countries must be resolved through discussions.

Fakhrul travelled to London on November 30 to meet Tarique Rahman and discuss with him the crucial political and the party's organisational issues.

The BNP leader, accompanied by his wife Rahat Ara Begum, arrived at the airport in Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 12:45pm. He said he had a meeting with the BNP Acting Chairman during his stay in London.

Fakhrul said, he spoke to expatriate Bangladeshis and BNP leaders and workers and joined meetings arranged by them.

"There has been a discussion with the press there. My visit to London was productive and fruitful," he added.

He, however, said the problems emerging within Bangladesh are challenging to address without an elected government.

Fakhrul's wife Rahat Ara Begum underwent health check-ups and received treatment in London.

Sources within the party said Fakhrul and Tarique Rahman, along with local leaders, discussed the potential visit of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to London for medical treatment.
