A woman was killed and at least four others injured when a passenger bus lost control and fell into a ditch due to dense fog at Amtali upazila in Barguna district.
The accident occurred at 5 am on Sunday (December 15) at Tular Mil under Chawra union in the upazila.
The dead was Rima Akter, 41, a resident of Jashore district. Rima with her family used to live in Savar, Dhaka, as her husband worked in a garment factory. She was going to Kuakata beach with her husband and children.
Amtali Fire Service Station Master Hanif said that a passenger bus belonging to 'Suravi Paribahan', bound for Kuakata, met with an accident early in the morning. One person was killed and four were seriously injured. The injured were rescued and sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment after receiving primary treatment at Amtali Upazila Health Complex.
The dead woman's husband and passenger Mamunur Rashid said they were sleeping at the time of the accident. When he woke up from a sudden jolt, he saw that the bus fell into a roadside ditch. His wife died on the spot and two-and-a-half-year-old son Rayan and six-year-old daughter Maliha were seriously injured.
Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ariful Islam said the vehicle was seized and the body was handed over to the family.
