East West University students on Sunday staged protests in front of their campus in the capital, demanding arrest of the murderers of their fellow Tajbir Hossain Shihan within 72 hours and beginning of judicial proceedings immediately.
Shihan, 26, was brutally murdered by assailants at Kaliakair, Gazipur, in broad daylight on Thursday morning. Shihan, who worked at a call centre at Uttara, was the son of Tanvir Hossain Nannu Mia from the Mouchak Jamtala area at Kaliakair.
The protesters demanded that the university authorities issue an immediate statement and feature Shihan on the university's website and apology from the police for failing to protect Shihan.
During the demonstration, students warned of waging tougher movement if the suspected murderers were not arrested within 72 hours. They decried that although three days passed, the motive behind the murder remained unclear.
They said that Tajbir Hossain Shihan had often written on Facebook about Indian imperialism, suggesting a possible connection between his activism and the murder.
