Police detained eight leaders and activists of Awami League, including Mahabubur Rahman, general secretary of Dhaka district unit AL, while they went to pay tribute at the National Memorial in Savar on Monday on the occasion of the Victory Day.
The identities of other detainees were not disclosed immediately.
Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, said that the detainees went there around 1PM reportedly to create chaos in the area.
The OC, however, said no weapons or explosives were found from their possessions. They are now being interrogated at the police station, Bakar said.
However, an Awami League leader claimed that their party members went to the memorial to pay homage to the martyrs of Liberation War. They were detained for harassment.
