The interim government will form a ‘National Consensus Building Commission’ soon as part of ongoing reform activities.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus told this while addressing the nation marking the Victory Day on Monday
The chief adviser said that six reform commissions have already been formed under the interim government and are expected to submit their final reports soon. Based on these reports, the government will move forward to create a National Consensus Commission composed of the chairpersons of these six commission, he added.
The commission will engage with political parties and other stakeholders to identify areas of national consensus and provide recommendations for implementation.
Dr Yunus said. “Given the importance of building national consensus, I (chief adviser ) will serve as the chairperson of this commission and Professor Ali Riaz will serve as the vice-chairman of this commission”.
The commission will have the authority to co-opt new members if necessary.
The chief adviser also expressed hope that the commission would begin its work next month after receiving the final reports from the six reform commissions.
The first task of this new commission, he said, will be to quickly create consensus on all the issues that are necessary for holding elections and to finalise the advice on when elections can be held after holding discussion with all concerned.
The chief adviser said that this commission will play a critical role in ensuring that the upcoming election is conducted in a fair and transparent manner, reflecting the aspirations of the people.
