Breaking their losing streak from the ODI series, Bangladesh clawed their way back into form with a thrilling victory over the West Indies in the opening T20i of the three-match series at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown in St. Vincent on Monday. A composed all-round performance, led by Sheikh Mahedi Hasan propelled the Tigers to a 7-run win, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.

West Indies won the toss and opted to field inviting Bangladesh to bat first. The Tigers posted a competitive 147 for six despite a shaky start that saw them lose three early wickets for just 30 runs. Tanzid Tamim (6), stand-in skipper Litton Das (0) and Afif Hossain Dhrubo (8) struggled to make an impact. Soumya Sarkar, the top scorer for Bangladesh, fell just seven runs short of a half-century, while Jaker Ali (27), Mahedi Hasan (26) and Shamim Hossain Patowari's explosive 27 off just 13 balls powered the team to a respectable total.

Although the pitch seemed conducive to batting, disciplined bowling from the West Indies particularly Akeal Hosein (two for 13) and Obed McCoy (two for 30) kept the Bangladesh total in check. Romario Shepherd and Roston Chase chipped in with one wicket each ensuring the Tigers did not run away with the game.

In reply, the hosts struggled to build momentum losing wickets at regular intervals. Brandon King (1), Nicholas Pooran (1), Roston Chase (7), Andre Fletcher (0), Gudakesh Motie (6) and Akeal Hosein (2) were dismissed cheaply. Skipper Rovman Powell's valiant 60 off 35 balls, supported by contributions from Romario Shepherd (22) and Johnson Charles (20) brought the West Indies within striking distance. However, the hosts fell short bowling out for 140 on the penultimate ball of the match.

Mahedi Hasan was the wrecker-in-chief for Bangladesh claiming four wickets for just 13 runs in his four overs. Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed chipped in with two wickets each, while Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Rishad Hossain picked up one apiece to seal the victory.

Sheikh Mahedi Hasan was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his stellar all-round performance setting the stage for Bangladesh to bounce back in the series.
