Bangladesh Under-19 Women began their ACC Women's Under-19 Asia Cup campaign with a comprehensive 28-run victory over Sri Lanka at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

A delayed start due to a wet outfield saw the match reduced to 17 overs per side. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first inviting Bangladesh to set a target. The Tigresses lost opener Juairiya Ferdous for a duck before opening their account but a resilient 44-run partnership for the second wicket between Mosammat Eva (18) and Sumaiya Akther (24) steadied the innings.

The dismissals of Jannatul Maoua (6) and skipper Sumaiya Akter (1) in quick succession momentarily stalled the scoring. However, crucial contributions from Afia Ashima Era (25) and Sadia Akter (31) ensured Bangladesh reached a competitive 122 for nine in their 17 overs.

For Sri Lanka, left-arm spinner Rashmika Sewwandi was the standout performer claiming four wickets for 23 runs. Pramudi Methsara and Aseni Thalagune shared two wickets each, while Hiruni Hansika picked up one.

Chasing 123 on a slow and turning surface, Sri Lanka's batters struggled against Bangladesh's disciplined bowling. Opener Hiruni Hansika was dismissed for a duck setting the tone for the innings. Despite resistance from Sanjana Kavindi (21), Rashmika Sewwandi (20), Limansa Thilakarathna (16) and Sumudu Nisansala (15), Sri Lanka fell short managing only 94 for eight in their 17 overs.

Bangladesh skipper Sumaiya Akter led from the front, claiming three wickets for just 12 runs in her two overs. Farjana Easmin and Nishita Akter Nishi chipped in with two wickets apiece, while Afia Ashima Era added one to her tally.

Sumaiya Akter was named the Player of the Match for her excellent all-round performance inspiring her side to an impressive opening win.
