Shaheed Jewel XI beat Shaheed Mushtaque XI by 9 wickets in a traditional Victory Day match, to mark the country's Victory Day on December 16, at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

Cricketing greats from different eras took the field to relive memories and inspire future generations, embodying the unity and spirit of the nation as the match has become a celebrated occasion in Bangladesh, not just for the game but for the homage it pays to the nation's history.

Opting to bat first,  Mushtaque XI amassed 128-5 in 15 overs allocation, a total that Jewel XI overhauled by making 133-1 in 14.2 overs.

Mohammad Rafique was the best performer of the game with 36 ball-58 and 2-13. Ehsanul Haque Seejan made 43 off 39 while Hannan Sarkar scored 25 off 16.

Talha Jubair took 2-25 and Abdur Razzak picked up 1-25.

The traditional cricket match was first organized in 1972 in memory of the Liberation War martyrs Shaheed Abdul Halim Chowdhury Jewel and Shaheed Mushtaque Ahmed.

One of the first active cricket players from what was then East Pakistan to take up guns and join the struggle for independence was Shaheed Jewel, an attacking right-handed opening batter for Azad Boys Club.

He fought valiantly for nine months before being arrested by the Pakistani army toward the conclusion of the war and executed only days before Bangladesh gained its independence.

Shaheed Mushtaque, on the other hand, was an inspirational Azad Boys Club official and a devoted cricket organizer. Mushtaque was shot dead by the occupation forces on the bloody night of March 25, 1971, close to his favorite club, which was then located in Gulistan in Dhaka.
