Road mishaps claim five lives in four districts

Five people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in four districts - Meherpur, Tangail, Rajbari and Lalmonirhat.

MEHERPUR: A woman was killed and four others were injured in a head-on collision between two motorcycles in Gangni Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accident occurred in Garadob area on the Meherpur-Kushtia regional highway of the upazila at around 12 pm.
The deceased was identified as Romana Akter, 35, daughter of late Khokon Ali of Kashyappara in Meherpur Town. She worked as a trainee lawyer at the Dhaka Judge Court.

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station (PS) Bani Israel said that the woman was going to Gangni from Meherpur at noon riding on a motorcycle. On the way, her motorcycle collided with another motorcycle from the front. She fell on road. Just at that time, another motorcycle ran over her and fled. Five people were seriously injured in the accident. 

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Meherpur General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Romana dead.
However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the OC added.

TANGAIL: The imam and muezzin of a mosque were killed in a road accident in Madhupur Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accident occurred early in the morning on the Tangail-Mymensingh regional highway adjacent to Barabaid Orphanage in Madhupur hilly forest area.

The deceased were identified as Hafez Habibur Rahman, 20, the imam of the Barbaid Orphanage Mosque, and Hafez Hasan Shirazi, 18, the muezzin. Habibur Rahman hailed from Sherpur while Hasan from Nagarpur Upazila in Tangail.

GOALANDA, RAJBARI: A youth was killed and five others were injured as a bus collided with a battery-operated auto-van in Goalanda Upazila of the district on Tuesday evening.

The accident took place at around 6 pm near Mokkuler Dokan area adjacent to Nabuo Chimdiddin Pura Government Primary School on the Dhaka-Khulna highway of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Jahangir Mollah, 35, a resident of Shomeshpur Village under Dashi Union. He was a construction worker by profession.

Local sources said that a bus hit a battery-run auto-van in the area in the evening, which left Jahangir dead on the spot and five other persons of the auto-van injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred two to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Confirming the incident, Ahladipur Highway Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Juwel Sheikh said that on information, police recovered the body from the scene and it would be handed over to the family after completing legal procedures.

However, efforts were underway to apprehend the bus driver, the SI added.

LALMONIRHAT: A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident in Patgram Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident took place in Mirzarkot Model Mosque area on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway of the upazila in the afternoon.
  
The deceased was identified as Sohel Rana, 32, son of retired teacher Abdus Sattar, a resident of Momimpur Village under Jongra Union in the upazila. He worked as a computer lab operator at Momimpur Bashkata Secondary School in the same union.
  
According to local and police sources, Sohel was returning home at Jongra from Patgram riding on his motorcycle at around 3 pm when a truck heading towards Lalmonirhat from Burimari hit his motorcycle from behind. The collision left Sohel critically injured. 

Locals then rescued him, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. 
 
Patgram PS OC Ashrafuzzaman Sarkar confirmed the incident, stating, "We have received information about the accident and the fatality. The investigation is being handled by Hatibandha's Barkhata Highway Police." 

When contacted, Barkhata Highway Police OC said that they are gathering further details about the accident and legal actions will be taken.
