A Joypurhat court on Wednesday acquitted BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman of sedition charges.

Joypurhat chief judicial magistrate Sham Sundhar Roy announced the verdict after concluding hearing on the case.

Joypurhat district court public prosecutor Advocate Shahnur Rahman Shahin told media that Joypurhat district Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) secretary Abu Bakar Siddique filed the case against Tarique Rahman in 2014.

Court sources reveal that the charges stemmed from remarks made by Tarique Rahman in December 2014. On December 15 and 17 of that year, the former BNP Senior Vice Chairman allegedly made provocative statements against the government, referring to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as a "razakar" (a collaborator with the Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War).

These statements were subsequently published in various media outlets.

Later, Abu Bakar Siddique filed the treason case against Tarique Rahman.
