Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among various service agencies to tackle the growing traffic congestion in the city.
He expressed that isolated actions from different agencies would not be enough to alleviate the traffic woes but a unified approach could bring about noticeable improvements.
Speaking at a view-exchange meeting held at CCC's Tigerpass office on Wednesday, the mayor highlighted the importance of collaboration between the CCC, Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), the Traffic Department of Police, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and other relevant bodies.
"We must work together to implement initiatives that will reduce congestion and streamline traffic flow," Dr. Hossain stated, noting the need for a comprehensive policy to regulate the movement of battery-operated rickshaws. He added that CCC magistrates had been instructed to take action against illegal charging stations used by these rickshaws, while urging the BRTA and other agencies to support these efforts.
During the meeting, Traffic Department DC (Traffic-North) Zainul Abedin shared insights into the challenges facing the city's traffic management. He pointed out that effective traffic management requires 25 percent of the city's area to be allocated to roads.
However, Chattogram currently has only 10 percent. He also stressed the urgent need for proper parking solutions, saying, "The lack of parking is a major issue. Identifying and designating parking areas is critical for improving the city’s traffic situation."
