An armed gang of robbers has reportedly entered and attempted to rob the Jinjira branch of Rupali Bank in Chunkutia Pakapul area under Dakshin Keraniganj Police Station in Dhaka.
Mazharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Keraniganj Police Station, said that some armed men entered the bank after lunch and took a number of people, including bank officials, hostage inside.
The suspected robbers also shut the collapsible gate of the building. He said they will conduct a rescue operation any moment.
Ahmed Muyid, superintendent of Dhaka District Police, said that the robbers stormed the bank in Chunkutia. However, locals quickly gathered and locked the bank trapping the robbers inside.
However, the eyewitnesses and police reported that the robbers entered the bank around 2PM on Thursday, taking the bank’s customers and employees hostage. They said after announcements were made through the loudspeakers of a nearby mosque, several hundred locals surrounded the bank.
Upon receiving information, law enforcement agencies, including police, army and RAB, have also surrounded the bank to arrest the robbers and rescue the hostages.
Md Jahangir Alam, additional superintendent of police (Keraniganj Circle), said that the robbers are still inside and they have learnt that robbers have firearms. So they are trying to discuss the situation with them and resolve it.
