BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan on Thursday said, "Though we ousted fascist Sheikh Hasina from the country, we are still struggling to restore democracy by ensuring free and fair general elections."
Speaking at a rally at Jamalpur Dewanganj Govt High School ground, demanding trail of Sheikh Hasina for committing genocide in July student-people movement, he said, "The people of this country gave their lives in 1971. After a few years, the achievement of independence was lost as BAKSAL was established by the Awami League government.
BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman was chief guest at the event, but he could not join the due to his preoccupation.
Nazrul Islam said, "Ziaur Rahman was the first person who established democracy and brought back multi-party political culture in the country."
He said, "We BNP leaders and activists must remember that we started a one-phase movement, the fight that took place in July-August was not only for the fall of fascism, but also for the establishment of democracy."
"Fascism has fallen, now democracy must be re-established. In the coming days, we want to create a garden of democracy and the graveyard of fascism under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman," he said.
Treasurer of BNP central committee Roshiduzzaman Millat said, "We may have disputes on some issues but in the name of BNP we are all under one umbrella."
He said, "In the student-people movement 17 were martyred in Jamalpur. Under the direction of Tarique Rahman we stand beside the martyrs families."
"We will name many establishment and road after July-August martyrs. If we can form the government in the coming general elections," said Millat.
