Adviser Hassan Ariff passes away

Adviser Ariff played significant role in Interim Govt: CA

AF Hassan Ariff, Adviser to the Ministries of Land, and Civil Aviation and Tourism, passed away today ((Friday) at the Labaid Specialized Hospital in Dhaka. He was 83.

The former attorney general was declared dead after being taken to Dhaka's Labaid Hospital on Friday, his son Moaz Ariff confirmed.
"The family brought Adviser Hassan Ariff to the hospital around 3:00pm. They said he had collapsed while having lunch. After conducting tests, we declared him dead at 3:35pm. However, he was already unresponsive when he arrived. He had suffered a cardiac arrest," the hospital's Public Relations Officer Chowdhury Meher-e-Khoda said.

A funeral prayer for Ariff will be held after the Isha prayers at Baitul Aman Mosque in Dhanmondi 7, said Civil Aviation and Tourism ministry spokesperson Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin. Another funeral prayer is scheduled at the High Court premises on Saturday at 11:00am. He added that the details regarding the burial will be announced later.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan also expressed profound shock and grief at the death of Hassan Ariff. She said the namaz-e-janaza of the late Adviser will be held Friday evening after Esha prayers at the mosque on Road 7 of Dhanmondi's Shat Masjid Road.

His second namaz-e-janaza will be held at 11:00am  on Saturday  on the High Court premises, she added. Ariff will be buried at Mirpur Intellectuals' graveyard.

The senior Supreme Court lawyer was born in Kolkata in 1941. He completed his secondary and higher secondary education at Kolkata's St Xavier's College. He then graduated with a bachelor's degree and an LLB from the University of Calcutta.

In 1967, after enrolling as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court, he moved to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). In 1970, he became a registered lawyer at the Dhaka High Court.

Ariff held several key legal positions throughout his career. Under military strongman HM Ershad, he served as assistant attorney general from April 1982 to August 1985 and as deputy attorney general from August 1985 to March 1996. He later served as attorney general during the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government, from October 2001 to April 2005.

From January 2008 to January 2009, he acted as law adviser to the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed. He was also a panel member of the Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre. The former attorney general represented Muhammad Yunus in several cases. He was a senior Supreme Court lawyer and the head of the "AF Hassan Ariff and Associates" chamber.

Hassan Ariff began his career at the Calcutta High Court in West Bengal, India, in 1967. After that, in 1970, he moved to Dhaka and began working as a lawyer at the High Court. Hassan Ariff was a Court Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration.

He had previously served as an Adviser to the Roads and Highways Department of the Government of Bangladesh, as well as at the Chittagong Port Authority, the Mongla Port Authority, the Security Exchange Commission, the Bangladesh Bank, the Capital Development Authority, the Chittagong Development Authority, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, the University Grants Commission (UGC), Robi Axiata Ltd, and Grameen Phone. He was also an Adviser to the Dhakeshwari National Temple Complex.

Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus on Friday expressed deep shock at the death of Adviser Hassan Ariff, who died of suspected heart attack. 

The Chief Adviser learnt the news of Adviser Hassan Ariff's death as soon as a plane carrying him from Dubai landed in Dhaka late on Friday  afternoon.

He rushed to Labaid Hospital in Dhanmondi from the airport to pay last respects to the late Adviser of the interim government.

"I am deeply shocked at his sudden demise. Adviser Hassan Ariff was a top lawyer who played a very significant role in the Interim Government," Prof Yunus said in a condolence message.

He paid rich tribute to Hassan Ariff's decades-long public service, including his time as a former adviser of a caretaker government and an attorney general of the country.

"He will be remembered as a brilliant lawyer and for his legal activism and defending human rights of dissidents, dissenting voices, and the marginalised people of our society," the Chief Adviser said.

He sent his condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
