Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)'s alliance partners have favoured holding the next general election by 2025, not in 2026.
According to the leaders of the 12-Party Alliance, if the election is not held by 2025, it may be delayed due to various reasons. So, BNP will have to exert political pressure on the interim government to hold the next election by 2025. The election cannot be deferred to 2026 in any way.
The leaders gave their opinions during a meeting held between the BNP's Liaison Committee and 12-Party Alliance at the BNP Chairperson's political office at Gulshan on Saturday (December 21) evening.
Coming out of the meeting, BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan said their party would constantly work with other political parties like the past on the political situation prevailing in the country and contemporary issues.
He said they shared opinions on the political situation now prevailing in the country. It would be informed later on if any decision is taken.
Nazrul Islam Khan also said the 12-Party Alliance and BNP struggled together against the fascism. "But the necessity of that has not been waned."
However, it is learned that the 12-Party Alliance leaders gave opinions in favour of holding the next general election by the next year. They think that if the election cannot be held by 2025, it may be delayed for various reasons. The election cannot be deferred to 2026 in any way. "So, political pressure will have to be exerted on the interim government for the parliamentary election by 2025."
Expressing firm determination to work with the BNP in the days ahead, Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) Chairman and 12-Party Alliance Chief Mostofa Jamal Haider said, "We have discussed about the possible future programmes in the context of the country's existing political situation. However, no final decisions have been taken so far."
Apart from the 12-Party Alliance leaders, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Begum Selima Rahman and vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo were present at the meeting.
