Seven killed, 16 injured in road mishaps

Seven people including a couple have been killed and 16 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts- Munshiganj, Patuakhali, Naogaon, Jashore, and Gazipur, on Saturday and Sunday.   
 
MUNSHIGANJ: A man has been killed and at least 15 have been injured in multi-vehicles' collisions due to low visibility amid dense fog on the Dhaka-Mawa expressway in Munshiganj's Sreenagar and Sirajdikhan upazilas.

The accidents occurred from early Sunday to 9am, Fire Service confirmed.

Following the accidents, traffic congestion was created on the highway.

The deceased was identified as Farhad Hossain, 40, a resident of Bhanga in Faridpur and the driver of one of the colliding buses. The injured 15 were sent to different hospitals in Sreenagar and Sirajdikhan.

Abul Kalam Azad, in-charge of Sreenagar Fire Service, said, "We rescued 10-15 from different spots. The vehicles movement on the highway became normal after 10am. The injured were sent to local hospitals."

Police said the movement of vehicles on the expressway has been suspended for around two hours following the accidents involving seven buses, truck and a private car.

Heavy fog led to the accidents on the expressway, said locals.

Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex emergency ward physician Marjia Mahbub said, around 9:45am, two injured--Farhad Hossain and Zakir Hossain--were brought to the hospital.

 PATUAKHALI: An agriculture official was killed in a collision between an ambulance and a CNG auto-rickshaw in the district's Sadar Upazila on Sunday morning. 

The accident took place at about 7am in Bhuban Sahari Kasari area in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Milon Howlader, 30, son of former member Sahabuddin Hawlader of Indrakul Village in  Bauphal Upazila in the district. He was an agriculture official in Mehendinganj Upazila. 

Locals said, Milon was on his way to work riding on a CNG run auto-rickshaw when an ambulance, coming from the opposite direction, collided with it, leaving him critically injured. 

Later on, he was rescued and taken to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baupha Police Station (PS) Kamal Hossain confirmed the matter. 

NAOGAON:  A man and his wife were killed and an auto-rickshaw driver was injured after a bus hit the vehicle in Dhamrai Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Kazi Shahin, 48, and his wife Rubina Akter, 37.

Locals said, a passenger bus collided with a battery-run auto-rickshaw on Saturday evening at Dhulivita on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, leaving Shahin, Rubina and the auto-rickshaw driver injured.

They were taken to Upazila Health Hospital where the couple were declared dead.

Dr Farsin Tarannum Haque said, three of the injured were brought to the hospital, and of them one died before arrival.

JASHORE: A collision between two motorcycles left a man dead in Monirampur Upazila of the district on Saturday. 

The deceased was identified as Afzal Hossain, 35, eldest son of Sabed Ali Sardar of Halsa Village at Shyamakur Union. 

According to locals, the incident happened at about 10:30am in Sharnpur area when Afzal was en route to his business in  Jhikargacha Upazila his motorcycle collided head-on with another motorcycle coming from Monirampur. He sustained critical injuries. 
  
Local residents rushed him to Jhikargacha Upazila Health Complex where doctors referred him to Jashore Sadar Hospital for treatment. But Afzal succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital; doctors later confirmed that he had died on the way.  

Monirampur PS OC Noor Mohammad Gazi confirmed the incident.

GAZIPUR: Two motorcyclists were killed in a road accident in the district's Shreepur Upazila on Saturday. 

The incident occurred at about 1:30pm on the Mawna-Kaliakoir regional road near Kawran Bazar. 

Of the victims, one was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 45, from Kangsya Village in Jhinaigati Upazila in Sherpur District. He was a contractor and lived with his family in Gazipur's Joydebpur Upazila. The identity of the second victim is yet to be ascertained. 

Shafiqul's wife, Shirina Akhter, said, her husband left their house at Joydebpur in the morning to visit a madrasa site in Kalihati area at Kaliakoir, when the accident occurred.

Confirming the incident, Mawna Police Outpost In-charge Sub-Inspector Mohammad Kuddus Mirdha said, the truck was travelling from Mawna to Kaliakoir when the motorcyclists attempted to overtake it and collided with its side, resulting in their instant deaths. 

The truck driver has been detained, and the vehicle has been seized for further investigation, he added.
