RAJSHAHI, Dec 22: The Rajshahi University administration has punished a total of 33 students for various periods, including permanently expelling six for various disciplinary violations, including direct attacks on the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
The administration has decided to impose these punishments in light of the complaints submitted to various departments, residential halls and the proctor's office, according to the university's Proctor Prof Mahbubur Rahman.
A press release from the university on Saturday night said that the decision to impose these punishments was taken at the university's 535th syndicate meeting on Dec 12 following the recommendations of the university's disciplinary subcommittee.
Depending on the type and severity of the crime, six students were permanently expelled, five were suspended for two years, four were suspended for a year, two were suspended for one semester, one was suspended for one semester and fined Tk 5,000, one was fined Tk 5,000 and the residency of 14 students was scrapped.
The press release mentioned that the students were punished for direct attacks on the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, ragging, conspiracy, involvement in incendiary activities, intimidation, hall seat trading, breaking locks and occupying the hall room, waking up students late at night and holding meetings, blackmailing students, and forcing students in public rooms to chant slogans.
In addition, it noted that students were also punished for various crimes including stealing another students' belongings, misbehaving, consuming drugs, disrupting the studies and sleep of others by playing loud music, taking them to their rooms at night and inflicting inhumane physical and mental torture, searching their mobile phones, USB drives and personal belongings, threatening to kill them, and harassing and bullying students.
Regarding the identities of the punished students, Proctor Mahbubur told bdnews24.com: "Their identities cannot be revealed right now. The identities of all the punished students will be revealed after a copy of the decision is sent to the relevant department."
