Shariatpur is witnessing a sharp rise in diarrhoea cases, particularly among children, as severe cold grips the region.

Prolonged fog and drizzle over the past three days have worsened the situation, leading to an alarming number of patients seeking medical attention. Despite the surge, health officials have assured residents that there is no cause for panic.
The diarrhoea ward at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, designed to accommodate 10 patients, is struggling under the strain. Over the last week, 176 patients have been admitted, including 36 new cases in the past 24 hours alone. Each day, approximately 35 to 40 patients are admitted, far exceeding the ward's capacity. This overflow has forced patients, including children and their caregivers, to stay on the hospital's balcony and other common areas, creating a challenging environment for both patients and medical staff.

During a visit to the hospital, patients were found scattered across the premises, with parents comforting their sick children or feeding them.

Abdul Jalil, a motorcycle trader from Shariatpur district, highlighted the dire situation, pointing out the lack of beds and the hardships faced by both patients and their families.

Paloki Kona, a senior nurse at the diarrhoea ward, described the immense pressure on the hospital staff. “The number of diarrhoea patients has increased significantly due to the cold. We are doing our best to provide treatment, but the limited number of beds and staff makes it very challenging,” she said.

Dr. Rajesh Majumdar, a paediatric specialist at the hospital, emphasized that the incidence of diarrhoea is four times higher during winter than in summer. He noted that while the hospital is making every effort to treat patients, the shortage of beds is a major obstacle. He advised parents not to panic if their children experience diarrhoea or vomiting and urged them to seek prompt medical care.

Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, the hospital's superintendent, acknowledged the challenges, including the need to accommodate patients on the floor. He warned residents to avoid consuming stale or contaminated food, which could worsen the outbreak. Additionally, he recommended breastfeeding for infants to strengthen their immunity.

As the cold weather persists, health professionals are urging the public to take preventive measures to protect children, who are particularly vulnerable. With the hospital stretched beyond capacity, the community is calling for increased resources and support to manage the crisis effectively.
