Meghna River vessel tragedy: Death toll rises to 7

Two more individuals succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Chandpur Upazila Health Complex on Monday afternoon, raising the number of fatalities from the tragic incident that took place at a fertiliser-laden vessel on the Meghna River in Chandpur to seven.

Earlier, police had recovered five bodies and rescued three critically injured individuals from the vessel. Of the injured people, two died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The identities of the deceased could not be known but another injured, who was sent to Dhaka for better treatment, has been identified as Jewel, aged around 28.
Chandpur River Police Superintendent Md Mushfiqur Rahman said that the bodies were recovered from an anchored ship on the Meghna River in Alurbazar area of Chandpur at around 3PM on Monday. The bodies have several injury marks. The details about the killings yet to be confirmed, he added.

He said police were informed via the national emergency service number 999 and reached the scene. They recovered five bodies in five different cabins of the ship and three injured individuals in critical condition.

Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin Uddin, along with officials from the River Police, is on-site to investigate the incident. The cause of the attack and further details remain under investigation.

Meanwhile, many suspected that the incident might have been a robbery attack carried out by pirates.
