Consumers find relief in Dumuria kitchen markets

DUMURIA, KHULNA, Dec 23: With the arrival of winter vegetables, consumers in Dumuria Upazila are experiencing relief as prices in the kitchen markets stabilize. Most vegetables are now within purchasing capacity, bringing a sense of balance to local markets.  

A visit to Dumuria, Chuknagar, and Atharo Mile Bazar on Monday revealed vegetable prices ranging from Tk 15 to Tk 70 per kilogram, with most items priced between Tk 20 and Tk 30 per kg.  

According to vendor Sheikh Montaz, the supply of winter vegetables is expected to increase further in the coming days, which will likely lead to a further decline in prices.  

In Dumuria, Chuknagar, and Atharo Mile Bazar per kg new potato is being sold at Tk 65, tomato at Tk 75, green chilli at Tk 70, bean at Tk 20, bitter gourd at Tk 40, cucumber at Tk 50, carrot at Tk 60, radish at Tk 10, onion leaf at Tk 40, and coriander at Tk 30.

Round brinjal is selling at Tk 40 per kg and long brinjal at Tk 35. Okra is selling at Tk 30 per kg, and turnip at Tk 30 per kg.

Cabbage is selling at Tk 30 per piece, medium sized cauliflower at Tk 20 per piece, and sweet pumpkin at Tk 35 per piece.

Seller Jalil Sheikh said, vegetable prices are decreasing expectedly, and it will continue to come down.

A housewife Asma Aktar said, prices of most vegetables are still high; these should be selling at Tk 15-20 per kg.

Per kg local onion is selling at Tk 70 in Chuknagar Bazar at the wholesale rate while Indian onion is selling at Tk 50-60.
 
At the retail level, local onion is selling at Tk 80 per kg. 

China ginger is selling at Tk 100 per kg, China garlic at Tk 200-210, new ginger at Tk 100-110, and garlic at Tk 210-220 per kg.

Beef is being sold at Tk 700 per kg while mutton is selling at Tk 950-1,000.

In this market, broiler hen is being sold at Tk 170, Pakistani breed at Tk 280, and local hen at Tk 450 per kg. 

The stabilisation in vegetable prices is a welcome respite for consumers, though many hope for further reduction as winter progresses.
